Conservation status and error analysis

Preserved vintage stereo receiver with FM and AM radio. The device was manufactured by Daewoo (Electown) in Korea in the 1970s. 2 pairs of loudspeakers can be connected, which enables the loudspeakers to be distributed in 2 listening zones.

After switching on the device, a radio station can be heard on FM at least once. The tuning rotary cannot be turned and appears to be locked. The potentiometers and switches must be cleaned.

Repairs recording

  • Loosen the stuck tuning rotary
  • Clean switch and potentiometer
  • Replace damaged power cord (retrofit with protective earth)
  • Replace indicator lamps
  • Check ESR of capacitors
  • Repair VU meter (no function)
  • Fix the glass of the frequency indicator

Troubleshooting and restoration

The rotary cap could be loosened with a little contact spray. The switches and potentiometers work after the treatment with contact spray now also flawless again.

The original power cord has only 2 wires and shows damage to the main insulation. The power cord has been replaced with a 3-core power cable, which has pulled in a core for protective grounding. The protective earth could be connected to a screw to be fixed on the housing.

The light bulbs are at an alternating voltage (AC) of 6.3 V. The old light bulbs were replaced through LED technology, which is compatible with AC voltage. The LEDs already have a rectifier and current limiter installed internally. Unfortunately, these LEDs were only available with screw contacts.

All repairs could be carried out. The indicators are now easy to read on the device. No more contact problems with the switches and potentiometers. All capacitors are still in perfect condition (ESR).

The specified VU meters had to be replaced with identical ones in the technical data. The blue scales (signal and tuning) were taken over from the old ones in the new VU meters and built into the housing. Unfortunately, the zero point could not be adjusted to 100% because the VU meters had to be rotated by 180 ° (due to the reversed built-in coil). In radio mode, the display instruments function at least perfectly again, this means it's moving again 😁.
